SCATTERING OF A PLANE-POLARIZED ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE OF RELATIVISTIC INTENSITY IN A PLASMA (1-D GEOMETRY).

Abstract:
A rigorous linear analysis of the instability of a plane-polarized electromagnetic wave of relativistic intensity is performed in a 1-D geometry. This instability is shown to be responsible for forward and backward Raman scattering (RS) by plasmons in a relativistic-intensity domain. In the process, the line center of an individual harmonic of RS is formed under the electron recoil effect in the scattering of an electromagnetic wave. Remote wings of the amplification line arise from the Langmuir noise generation. The line shape and the relative pulse duration depend on the intensity of the reference wave.
