FIRST EXPERIMENTS ON PLASMA HEATING IN THE L-2M STELLARATOR ASSISTED BY BERNSTEIN WAVES

Abstract:
In the experiments staged on the L-2M stellarator, HF power at frequencies ω = ωci and ω = 3/2ωci was coupled into a previously produced and heated plasma. A screened antenna located along the length of the torus was employed to generate the Bernstein wave. The ion Bernstein heating at ω = ωci was studied in the two modes of prior plasma production: for ohmic and electron cyclotron heating. These modes differ in the magnetic field structure and the plasma parameters. In both cases, the ion component was found to heat up; the efficiencies of heating proved to be similar and equal to η = 1.5eV/kW even though the dependences ΔTi(t) were different. The heating for Δ = 3/2Δci was studied in the ohmic mode; the efficiency of heating was no different from the Δ = Δci case.
