EXPERIMENTS ON THE SQUEEZING OF OPTICAL RADIATION IN A SPATIAL REGION WHICH IS CONSIDERABLY SMALLER IN SIZE THAN THE RADIATION WAVELENGTH
Authors:
V.S. Zuev, A.V. Frantsesson.

Abstract:
Squeezing of the electromagnetic wave on an area of size d << λ(d ~ 1 nm) in a biconical system formed by a metal needle and a plane is obtained. At distances r < 10 nm from the plane, the converging wave and the reflected wave at the microwave and optical frequencies were excited. The sensitivity of the spectroscopy of a molecule with a biconical system in its near field is increased by a factor (λ/r)4 = 1012 (λ = lμm, r = 1nm). The biconical system combines the function of a measurer and an instrument and works simultaneously at several wavelengths μ. Experiments of other authors are discussed from the viewpoint of waves in a biconical horn. It is shown that the technique may be extended to the UV and soft X-ray regions.
