Title: RELAXATION IN OPTICAL DETECTION Authors: V.P. Bykov. Abstract: In a system of unexcited three-level atoms placed in a nonresonance laser field, a weak optical signal populates one of the excited levels, so that the atoms find themselves at resonance with the laser field. The laser radiation is intensely scattered to the effect that previously unexcited modes of the atoms-containing cavity are excited. The system under consideration possesses states particularly sensitive to external fields and may serve as a basis for high-sensitivity detectors of optical radiation.
