Abstract:
Nonlinear dynamics of low-frequency instability of a weakly ionized plasma in an external electric field is studied. This dynamics can be realized when account is taken of only elastic collisions between charged and neutral particles and only in the assumption that the collision frequency is independent of the particle energy. A nonlinear equation is obtained which describes the plasma density dynamics and has the form of a diffusion equation with a negative nonlinear diffusion coefficient. The latter fact shows that the evolution of the instability is explosive. The time of the explosion and the spatial distribution of the plasma density are determined.
