Abstract:
The effect of current interruption in a plasma diode on attainment of the critical current magnitude (equal to the thermal current) attracts considerable attention due to its interesting practical applications. Until the present time, the mechanism of current interruption has not been completely elucidated. Here, an investigation is made of the phase of the process preceding the current interruption. The main trends of the pre-interruption dynamics can be studied on the basis of a hydrodynamic model under simplifying assumptions. This treatment leads to a critical state of the system and an explosive plasma bleaching. A system of this type is unstable, and a subsequent development of the process (current interruption) can be stimulated by the Buneman instability development.
