Title: INTERACTION OF PAST MULTIPLY CHARGED URANIUM IONS WITH A PLASMA TARGET Authors: K.. Val, M.. Gaisseel, A.A. Golubev, M.. Rot, I.V. Rudskoi, A.. Tauschvitz, I.Y. Tolstikhina, V.I. Turtikov, A.D. Fertman, D.. Hoffmann, B.Y. Sharkov, A.Y. Tsvetkov, V.P. Shevelko. Abstract: The interaction of Uq+ ions having an energy E = 3.6 - 11.5MeV/n and a charge qi = 28 - 80 with
atoms and ions of a dense plasma is considered. The plasma is produced in a polyethylene-capillary discharge
at a temperature of about 3.5 eV and a density of ~5*1019cm-3. The cross sections for the one-electron charge
exchange and the ionization of incident uranium ions and their corresponding average (equilibrium)
charge beyond the plasma target are calculated to be q = 60 ? 2. The experimental average charge attained
the value q = 63 ? 1. The problems associated with the effects of many-electron ionization processes and
decays of highly excited uranium atoms levels formed in collisions with carbon atoms and ions in plasma are discussed.
