Abstract:
We revealed strong anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility of PrMnO3 and NdMnO3 single crystals and qualitatively different temperature dependences of their spontaneous weak-ferromagnetic moments (σ0||c-axis), which are due to the anisotropic contributions of the corresponding rare-earth ions. In submillimeter transmission spectra (ν = 2-33cm1) we observed several absorption lines identified as antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) modes of Mn ions and rare-earth modes associated with the electronic transitions inside (a) the fundamental Pr3+ quasi-doublet split by the crystal field (~14.5cm-1) and (b) the Kramers Nd3+ doublet split by the exchange field of the Mn subsystem (~14cm-1). The observed static and dynamic magnetic properties of PrMnO3 and NdMnO3 are analyzed using the single-doublet approximation for Nd3+ (Pr3+) ions, and the corresponding components of g tensors of the doublet (quasi-doublet) and their splitting in the exchange (crystal) field are determined from comparison with experiment.
