Title: MAGNETOOPTICAL PROPERTIES OF PHOTON CRYSTALS Authors: A.K. Zvezdin. Abstract: The magnetpoptical properties of materials with periodically modulated properties (i.e., photon crystals or band-gap materials) are considered from the viewpoint of the feasibility of their use for control of electromagnetic radiation fluxes and photon crystal parameters. The mode conversion TE ?? TM, which is analogous to the Faraday magneto-optical effect, is shown to occur in a magnetic field oriented in the basal plane of a 2D photon crystal. The mode conversion factor increases when the electromagnetic wave frequency approaches the frequency limit of allowed bands. This behavior is also inherent in the relative phase shift ?mb between TE and TM modes, the effect which occurs in a magnetic field perpendicular to the basal plane of a 2D photon crystal and is similar to the linear magnetic birefringence in optics.
