THE SUPERCONDUCTING PLATE IN A MAGNETIC FIELD
Authors:

Abstract:
Self-consistent solutions of the nonlinear system of Ginzburg-Landau equations for an infinite superconducting plate of thickness 2D, placed in an external magnetic field H, are studied. The critical field H1(k) is found, in which the vortex-free state in a type-II superconductor becomes unstable and the superconductor jumps over into a special (also vortex-free) state with the order parameter suppressed near the plate surface. If the field H is increased further, such an edge state transforms into the normal state (in the field ?2) through a second order phase transition. In type-I superconductors no such edge state is formed; however, there exists a minimum thickness D, for which the first-order phase transition into the normal state (typical of type-I superconductors) changes to a second-order phase transition.
