POLARIZATION OF He-LIKE ARGON ION EMISSION LINE EXCITED BY AN ELECTRON BEAM
Authors:
F.F. Goryaev, J.. Dubau, A.M. Urnov.

Abstract:
The effective cross sections of excitation of magnetic sublevels of He-like argon ions by an electron beam have been calculated for the first time. On the basis of these calculations, we estimate the degree of polarization of w, x, y, and z lines corresponding to transitions from levels with the principal quantum number n = 2. The effect of cascades upon polarization of lines is investigated and the most notable effect (on x and z lines) is shown to be produced by cascade transitions from levels n = 2 and 3. The contribution of a cascade to the degree of polarization of the forbidden line z, which is not polarized in excitation by a direct electron impact, reaches ~ 18% for near-threshold energies of the electron beam.
