Abstract:
We consider the tangential discontinuity in a compressible conducting liquid in an external magnetic field. Analyzing the well-known dispersion equation, we derive a generalized condition of discontinuity surface stability under small perturbations, which in the limit of incompressibility implies the well-known condition due to S. I. Syrovatskii. An arbitrarily small compressibility is shown to play a destabilizing role by narrowing the discontinuity stability region.
