THE INFLUENCE OF ACTIVE SOLAR REGIONS ON THE GLOBAL THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY AND WEATHER ON THE EARTH
Authors:
V.I. Ermakov, Y.I. Stozhkov.

Abstract:
The analysis of many-year data (obtained at high-altitude (3km) stations) on the electric field strength variations in atmosphere characterizing the thunderstorm activity on the global scale showed earlier that approximately two days after an active region crosses the central meridian of the Sun the thunderstorm activity on the Earth is maximum. In the same period one observes maximum weather variations due to showers, storms, hurricanes, etc. We suggest a conclusion that an active region induces thunderstorm activity and thus affects the weather by way of a high-speed solar wind coming from this active region. An active region first appears on the solar limb, which makes it possible to allow for the effect of this region in a short-term (several days) weather forecast. Large active regions exist during several revolutions of the Sun, and therefore solar activity can be taken into account in a long-term weather forecast.
