ON THE MECHANISM OF FORMATION OF POWERFUL ELECTRON BEAMS IN DENSE GASES
Authors:
V.F. Tarasenko, S.I. Yakovlenko, V.M. Orlovskii,

Abstract:
The conditions of the formation of an electron beam in various gases are investigated theoretically and experimentally at atmospheric pressure for a nanosecond voltage pulse. An electron beam of 50 ? 130 keV with a record current amplitude of ~ 70 A in air and ~ 200 A in helium is obtained. It is shown that a high-current beam at a high pressure can be obtained because of the existence of recently theoretically discovered upper branches of the curves characterizing both the criterion of runaway of electrons and the criterion of discharge ignition (the Townsend-Paschen criterion). The electron beam is formed at the breakdown stage when the plasma produced at the cathode comes close to the anode.
