ELECTRON ACCELERATION UPON PROPAGATION OF SELF-CHANNELED INTENSE LIGHT PULSES

Abstract:
We consider electron acceleration by the electromagnetic field of a moving ion cloud created by a short laser pulse propagating in a medium. We show that as in the case of a point ion, electrons also have a critical value of impact parameter. Electrons with an impact parameter less than critical are entrapped by the ion cloud and being affected by the ponderomotive force are reflected from the region of laser radiation localization and oscillate in the neighborhood of the cloud for some time. In this case, the electron energy may reach tens of MeV and thus exceed considerably the electron oscillation energy in the laser radiation field. When detached from the ion cloud, the electrons form a beam with an energy equal to several MeV. The mechanism considered here is adequate for the acceleration wake wave investigated earlier by many authors. The form of the calculated angular spectrum of accelerated electrons coincides with the known experimental data.
