Abstract:
The interaction of a light beam with homeotropically and planarly aligned samples of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) (1) "mixture A", consisting entirely of azoxymolecules, and (2) NLC ZhKM-1277 with minor admixture of azodye KD-1 has been experimen?tally studied. It is shown that at certain light wavelengths the sign of orientational nonlinearity of the homeotropic samples of these NLCs reverses from positive to negative, the reorientation ending with the memory effect. In the planar samples, the previ?ously observed specific features of the light beam reflected from NLCs are studied in detail.
