INTERACTION OF /3-CAROTIN AND CHLOROPHYLL A WITH BOVINE SERUM ALBUMIN

Abstract:
The fluorescence of complexes of natural photosynthetic pigments of/9-carotin (/3-C), chlorophyll a (Chi), and their mixtures in dif?ferent ratios with bovine serum albumin (BSA) in water solutions is investigated. The fluorescence intensity in complexes of pig?ment mixture with BSA is found to increase. The maximum (4 ? 6 time) increase of fluorescence intensity compared to that of single-component complexes of BSA (/?-C) and BSA (Chi) is reached for a ratio of 11 - 27% of (3-C to 89 - 73% of Chi in complex with BSA. The fluorescence spectra of complexes of chlorophyll a with BSA (the maximum at 690 nm) and /3-C with BSA overlap to a great extent. This suggests a conclusion that in the study of fluo?rescent characteristics of natural photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes one should consider the possibility of the presence of intrinsic fluorescence of /3-carotin and the relative compounds.
