INSTABILITY OF CYLINDRICAL CAVITY IN A LIQUID FOR A NEGATIVE TENSION COEFFICIENT
Authors:
E.M. Yurkov, S.I. Yakovlenko.

Abstract:
We have considered stability of cylindrical cavity in a liquid for the case of surface repulsion rather than surface tension. Such a situation can occur owing to a surface charge generation at the plasma-liquid interface, which was used to explain the mechanism of formation of a chain of caverns upon a laser-induced destruc?tion of a light guide. Our consideration shows that (as distinct from the case of surface tension analyzed by Rayleigh) for a nega?tive tension coefficient the cylindrical surface is unstable under all modes except for the axially symmetric mode. The axially sym?metric mode is unstable under perturbations with a wavelength shorter than the circumference of the cavity cross section and is stable under perturbations with a wavelength longer than the circumference of the cavity cross section.
