Abstract:
The basic ionization and drift characteristics for neon are simulated using multiparticle dynamics methods. The calculations show that in neon, as in other already investigated gases, the Townsend ionization regime sets in even in strong fields if the electrode spacing is sufficiently large. The dependences of the basic ionization and drift characteristics on the reduced field strength are obtained. The results agree with the available experimental data. The runaway curve for neon is constructed, which separates the region of effective electron multiplication and the region where electrons leave the discharge gap before they have enough time to multiply. An analogue of the Paschen curve is obtained on the basis of the runaway curve.
