Abstract: The velocity distribution function of ions in the near-electrode layer of a gas discharge is analyzed with allowance for the resonant ion charge exchange with the buffer gas atoms. Under typical gas discharge conditions near the electrode, the velocity distribution of ions is found to be characterized by the Maxwell function with the gas atom temperature and the energy gained by the ion during the free path.
