PROPAGATION OF FAST AVALANCHE ELECTRONS IN NITROGEN AND HELIUM
Authors:
A.N. Tkachev, S.I. Yakovlenko.

Abstract:
The propagation of fast avalanche electrons in nitrogen and helium is simulated. A group of fast electrons does not on the average move with acceleration, but has a constant velocity. The distribution of fast electrons over the projection of momentum onto the field direction contains a large amount of electrons moving against the field. The dependences of the steady-state mean velocity and energy of the group of fast electrons on the electric field strength are calculated. It is shown that the runaway (constant acceleration) of electrons in an electric field is restricted by head-on collisions with neutral particles.
