Abstract: Possibilities are analyzed of using a scintillation-counter hodoscope based on plastic scintillators as a moderator and a detector of neutrons produced in the interactions of high-energy cosmic-ray particles in the substance of an ionization-neutron calorimeter. The introduction of thin cadmium or gadolinium absorbers into the calorimeter structure is shown to improve the neutron-detection efficiency and to considerably decrease the contribution of neutron-background events.
