EFFECTIVE CHARGE OF MACROIONS AND STABILITY OF STRONGLY ASYMMETRIC ELECTROLYTES WITH DIFFERENT SALT CONCENTRATIONS
Authors:
V.A. Lobaskin, K.. Qamhieh, N.G. Gussein-zade.

Abstract:
Electrostatic destabilization mechanisms of strongly asymmetric electrolytes are studied. The Monte Carlo method is used to simulate a system of charged macroions immersed in a solution of multivalent salt. For low salt concentration, the effective charge of macroions and their electrophoretic activity decrease because of adsorption of multivalent counterions. For high salt concentration, the excessive counterion adsorption leads to a change of the effective-charge sign of macroions and their mobility. With a further heightening of salt content the inverted charge increases to a certain limiting quantity. The system remains stable for both low and very high salt concentrations. In the intermediate region close to the isoelectric point of macroion, aggregation of macroions is observed. It is shown that the behavior of such an asymmetric electrolyte is analogous to flocculation of colloidal dispersions caused by an addition of an oppositely charged polymer.
