Title: ELECTROPHORETIC MOBILITY OF A CHARGED COLLOIDAL PARTICLE:
COMPUTER SIMULATION Authors: N.G. Gusein-zade, O.I. Vinogradova, V.A. Lobaskin. Abstract: Computer simulation was used to study electrophoretic mobility of a charged colloidal particle in a constant homogeneous electric field. The proposed method combines simulation of liquid with the help of the kinetic Boltzmann equation and the standard Langevin dynamics for a colloidal sphere which is represented by a set of interaction points on its surface. The interaction between two subsystems is introduced by way of the viscous friction force. In addition, the model includes counterions of the colloidal particle which also interact with the liquid. We obtained a nonmonotonic dependence of electrophoretic mobility of the particle on its structural charge. For a low charge surface density the mobility increases linearly, whereas for a high charge density, when most of the ions move together with the particle, the mobility decreases with growing structural charge. It is shown that the influence of periodic boundary conditions is negligibly small and that the results obtained describe the dynamics of an individual particle in electrolyte.
