Title: GLOW OF GLOBULAR PHOTONIC CRYSTALS
UNDER ULTRAFIOLET EXCITATION Authors: V.S. Gorelik, A.A. Esakov, A.B. Fadyushin. Abstract: The globular photonic crystals, i.e., artificial opals, excited with ultraviolet light sources ?? = 363.5 and 381.1 nm) were revealed to glow. The glow spectrum of artificial opals is shown to lie in the range of 425 to 600 nm with the glow intensity maximum near the exciting line (the low-frequency glow) and additional intensity maxima in the Stokes region. The form of the glow spectrum was found to depend on the exciting radiation wavelength and the sample thickness. The observed secondary radiation near the exciting line frequency can be explained as a manifestation of Raman scattering of light with efficiency increasing with the density of photon states near the edge of the photon forbidden band. The observed glow in the Stokes region far from the exciting line is explained as a manifestation of parametric scattering processes, namely, the decay of exciting radiation quantum into two other quanta.
