STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN GRAPHITE IN THE REGION OF LASER HEATING AS A RESULT OF GRAPHITE−CARBINE PHASE TRANSITION

Abstract:
The interaction region of concentrated YAG:Nd3+ laser radiation of power 30 and 60 W with graphite surface was studied using laser and force microscopes. The graphite structure was found to change in the heated graphite surface region, exceeding greatly the size of a cavity formed under exposure to laser radiation. This structural change was supposed to be caused by solid-phase graphite−carbine and carbine−graphite transitions occurring in the region adjoining the cavity upon heating (after laser radiation is switched-on) and cooling (after it is switched-off), respectively.
