Abstract:
It was shown that the uniform breakdown of a gas gap for both rectangular and triangular voltage pulses is characterized by the similarity relations (breakdown curves) between the field strength reduced to the pressure and the product of the pressure and the characteristic duration of the voltage pulse. In this case, the breakdown criterion is described by a two-valued breakdown curve such that efficient electron multiplication becomes impossible not only in the weak, but also in the very strong fields, as well as at small products of the pressure and pulse duration. The characteristic electron density rise time at the breakdown instant is much shorter than the time from the pulse start to the breakdown.
