Abstract: It has recently been shown that the ionization propagation in a gas under nearly atmospheric pressure can be not due to the electron or photon transfer, but due to the multiplication of low-density background electrons. We now consider some distinctive features of these discharges and the properties of plasma occurring in the afterglow of the multiplication wave. It is stated that such discharges are promising for pumping plasma lasers and high power-density lamps.
