Abstract:
We present a theory of the propagation instability of a plane monochromatic circularly polarized electromagnetic wave of relativistic intensity in the context of a three-dimensional space geometry in a plasma, considering arbitrary polarization of the scattered radiation. We study the generation of harmonics of the propagating radiation due to striction and relativistic non-linearity, the Compton scattering caused by the electron recoil effect, the decay instability of the harmonics with the formation of scattered electromagnetic waves (Stokes components of SRS) and plasmons, the effects of interaction of electromagnetic waves in a plasma (which give rise to anti-Stokes components of SRS), and the generation of the continuum. The transition of the three-dimensional theory to the one-dimensional problem and the non-relativistic limit is discussed.
