Title: LIFSHITZ SURFACE INVARIANT AND SPACE-MODULATED STRUCTURES IN THIN FILMS Authors: A.K. Zvezdin. Abstract: We investigated the possibility of the formation of spacemodulated structures (incommensurate phases) in thin films of materials with orientational order parameter (ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, liquid crystals, etc.). We showed that the presence of summands proportional to first derivatives of the order parameter, i.e., Lifshitz invariants, in the surface energy of films may be responsible for the formation in sufficiently thin films of a spatially modulated structure uniform over the film thickness. The conditions of the existence of uniform and modulated phases dependent on the constants of surface and volume anisotropy and film thickness are presented.
