Abstract:
The properties of the Debye atom, i.e., of a charged dust particle surround by a cloud of electrons and ions distributed according to Boltzmann, are considered using the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. The potential and the electric field strength are calculated as functions of the distance to the center of a spherical dust particle with radius much smaller than the Debye radius. The analytical expressions agree with the numerical calculations. The dependence of the Debye atom radius (defined as the distance on which the field strength becomes zero) on the dust particle charge and other plasma parameters is calculated.
