1. Title:
DEBYE MOLECULE IN A PLASMA
Authors:
V.A. Gundienkov, S.I. Yakovlenko.

Abstract:
The Poisson-Boltzmann equation for a charge cloud surrounding two charged dust particles treated as Debye atoms that form a Debye molecule are numerically investigated with the use of Cassini coordinates. The force of the electric field with which one dust particle acts on another dust particle is determined by integration of the electrostatic pressure on the surface of the dust particle. It is shown that repulsion occurs for small dust-particle separations. Attraction forces occur when the following two conditions are met. First, the Debye radius (corresponding to the electron density at half the average distance between dust particles) should be approximately equal to half the average distance between the dust particles. Then the dust-particle attraction emerges for a separation approximately equal to the average distance between the dust particles. Second, attraction takes place if like charges are grouped primarily on the dust particles. When dust particles bear a small fraction of the charge of some sign, the particles experience repulsion for any separation.
