"LOSS" CODE FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE CROSS SECTIONS FOR IONIZATION OF FAST-IONS BY ATOMIC TARGETS

Abstract:
This paper describes the computer LOSS code for calculation of the cross sections for ionization (stripping) of incident ions in collisions with atoms and ions. The code takes into account the atomic structure of the target in the form of its effective charge in the momentum transfer representation. We outline the first results of numerical calculations by the LOSS code which include the stripping cross sections and ion-beam lifetimes for heavy low-charge ions of Pb, Bi, and U of interest for the physics of beam nuclear fusion. The stripping cross-section similarity laws were derived for the collisions of Pb-like ions with neutral atoms; owing to the effect of screening, the stripping cross sections are proportional to the factor Z14, where Z is the nuclear charge of the target atom.
