Abstract:
A theory explaining the phenomenon of "normal cathode current density" is suggested. The mode of the gas discharge is considered when the area of the cathode spot (the cathode area through which the current flows) varies in proportion to the discharge current and the current density within the spot remains unchanged. The theory is based on consideration of the boundary conditions on both sides of the cathode potential drop, i.e., in the vicinity of the cathode and in transition to the positive discharge column.
