Abstract: We propose a new mechanism of ionization propagation in a dense gas associated with multiplication of background electrons in an inhomogeneous electric field. This mechanism does not depend on the sign of the field projection onto the ionization propagation direction. The motion of the streamer depends on the electric field concentration on its head. An analytical expression for the ionization front velocity is derived on the basis of a simple equation allowing for background electron multiplication. This expression agrees well with numerical calculations made in the framework of both the simple model of background electron multiplication and the detailed diffusion-drift model. In particular, within the diffusion-drift model we demonstrate the ionization front motion, due to background electron multiplication, from an anode of small radius to a cathode.
