Title: SUBNANOSECOND ELECTRON BEAM IN NEON AND HELIUM AT A HEIGHTENED PRESSURE Authors: S.B. Alekseev, V.M. Orlovskii, V.F. Tarasenko, A.N. Tkachev,, S.I. Yakovlenko. Abstract: The formation of a subnanosecond electron beam at a heightened pressure in neon and helium is investigated. Two mechanisms responsible for the electron runaway are analyzed. An electron subnanosecond beam with a current density of ~ 6 A/cm2 is ob?tained in neon at atmospheric pressure. It is shown that with varying neon pressure from 150 to 760 Torr and helium pressure from 300 to 760 Torr the conditions for electron beam formation are preserved. The performed calculations simulate the electron multiplication wave propagation from cathode to anode within the diffusion-drift model. The calculations show that the optimum conditions for electron beam formation occur when the ionization wave approaches the anode.
