1. Title:
SEYFERT GALAXIES - POSSIBLE SOURCES OF ULTRAHIGH-ENERGY COSMIC RAYS
Authors:
A.V. Uryson.

Abstract:
A model is proposed for particle acceleration up to energies E ≈ 1021eV in the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies. The acceleration occurs in the hot spots of relativistic jets decaying in the dense stellar core at a distance of 1 - 3pc from the center. The maximum energy and the chemical composition of accelerated particles depend on the magnitude of the magnetic field in the jet. For a field strength ? ~ (5 - 40)Gs, the nuclei with Z ≥ 10 acquire energies E ≥ 2 * 1020eV, and lighter nuclei are accelerated up to E ≤ 1020eV. In a field with ? ~ 100Gs, particles with Z > 2 are accelerated up to energies E ≤ 1020eV. In a field with ? ~ 1000Gs, particles with Z ≥ 23 alone acquire energies E ≥ 1020eV. The highest energy is gained by Fe nuclei (E ≈ 8 * 1020eV) if the field intensity in the jet is ? ≈ 16Gs. Protons are accelerated to E < 4 * 1019eV and do not fall within the energy range of interest in a field ? of any magnitude. If this model is valid, the protons recorded are fragments of the nuclei or are accelerated in other sources (conceivably in lacertides). The magnetic fields in jets can be estimated from the energy spectrum and chemical composition of cosmic rays.
