Title: FLUORESCENCE OF AGGREGATED /^-CAROTENE
IN LANGMUIR FILMS AND IN COMPLEX
WITH PROTEIN IN SOLUTION
Authors: I.A. Nagovitsyn, G.K. Chudinova, V.V. Savranskii, G.G. Komissarov. Abstract: The fluorescence of /^-carotene (/?-C) in one-component Langmuir films and in complex with protein ? bovine serum albumin (BSA) in solution ? has been studied. The fluorescence maxima of /3-C films are at 576 and 690 nm and those of BSA(/?-C) complex are at 622, 647, and 694 nm. The fluorescence spectra of the complexes of (1) chlorophyll a and BSA (the maximum at 690 nm) and (2) f3-C and BSA overlap considerably. This suggests the necessity of allowance for intrinsic fluorescence of /3-carotene and related compounds in studies of the fluorescence characteristics of natural photosynthetic pigment?protein complexes.
